Are We Choosing Our Holidays, or Are They Choosing Us?
Have you ever noticed how we can spend hours looking for a holiday, with practically the whole world available to us, and still end up looking at the same handful of places?
It’s quite interesting really, when you think about it.
We have more information available to us now than we’ve ever had before. We can look around hotels, watch videos of resorts, compare hundreds of holidays and read what other people thought about them, all without leaving the house.
Years ago, we’d probably have picked up a few brochures or gone into a travel agent and had a conversation about what we fancied doing.
Nowadays, we can research almost anything ourselves… And that’s a good thing.
But I’ve been thinking about whether having all this information sometimes influences our choices in ways we don’t necessarily realise. Because although we might think we’re simply looking for somewhere to go, we’ve probably already been influenced by quite a few things before we’ve even started searching.
How Did That Destination Get Into Our Heads in the First Place?
Think about the places you automatically consider when you’re looking for a holiday.
You probably have a few favourites… Perhaps you’ve been somewhere before and enjoyed it… Maybe friends or family have recommended somewhere, or you’ve seen a holiday advertised that caught your attention.
Then there’s social media.
You can be sitting at home scrolling through Facebook, not even thinking about booking a holiday, when a photograph or video appears showing a beautiful hotel, a beach or somewhere you’ve always fancied visiting.
You stop for a look… Perhaps you read the comments or have a quick look at where it is.
A few days later, you see somewhere similar.
Then somebody you know mentions they’ve just booked a holiday there. Before long, that destination starts becoming somewhere you’re interested in visiting yourself.
And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. It’s one of the ways we discover places we might otherwise never have heard about.
But what’s interesting is that our interest hasn’t necessarily started with what we were originally looking for.
It’s developed through what we’ve seen and heard along the way.
And I think that’s worth understanding, because there’s a difference between somewhere catching our attention and somewhere actually being right for the holiday we want.
The Reassurance of Popularity
There’s something quite natural about being drawn towards places that lots of other people enjoy.
If thousands of people visit a resort every year, the hotels have good reviews and everybody seems to be having a lovely time, it gives us a certain amount of reassurance.
After all, holidays aren’t cheap, and most of us don’t get unlimited time away from work and everyday responsibilities.
We want to enjoy ourselves.
So why wouldn’t we look at somewhere that already seems to be doing a good job of keeping people happy?
But popularity can sometimes tell us more about how many people enjoy a place than whether we’d enjoy it ourselves.
And there’s a difference…
Imagine a resort that’s famous for its nightlife.
It might have fantastic restaurants, plenty of entertainment and a brilliant atmosphere in the evenings.
For somebody who enjoys all those things, it could be absolutely perfect.
But imagine somebody else who prefers quieter evenings, somewhere peaceful to sit with a drink and a nice restaurant without too much going on around them. The resort hasn’t suddenly become a bad holiday destination.
It just doesn’t offer quite the experience that person is looking for.
And yet both people might have been attracted by exactly the same lovely photographs and excellent reviews.
That’s where I think understanding the details becomes more useful than simply following what’s popular.
💡 Voyantra Insider Tip: When you’re researching a hotel or resort, try looking beyond the overall rating. Pay attention to what people are actually saying about the things that matter to you. Is a hotel described as lively or peaceful? Are people commenting on the location, the food, the entertainment or how easy it is to get around? And have a look at the reasons behind negative reviews too. Somebody complaining that a resort is too quiet might actually be describing your idea of a perfect holiday. Equally, a hotel receiving fantastic reviews for its entertainment might not be what you’re looking for if you want somewhere to relax. The rating gives you an indication. The reasons behind it give you something to think about.
When Having More Choice Makes Things More Complicated
There’s another thing I’ve noticed about searching for holidays online.
You can start off with a fairly good idea of what you want…
A nice hotel, somewhere warm, a particular budget and perhaps a few things to do nearby. Simple enough.
Then you start comparing.
One hotel has better rooms, but another is closer to the beach… One includes breakfast, another has a better pool. Then you find somewhere with excellent reviews, but it’s a little more expensive.
And just when you think you’ve made your mind up, another holiday appears that looks equally appealing.
Before long, you’re comparing things you hadn’t even thought were particularly important when you started. I think we’ve probably all done something similar.
It’s almost as though the more options we find, the harder it becomes to settle on one. Not because there aren’t any good holidays available.
Quite the opposite.
There are so many that we start wondering whether we’re missing something better… And sometimes, in trying to make absolutely sure we’re making the right choice, we can lose sight of what originally interested us.
What Makes Somewhere Feel Right?
This is where I think the subject gets particularly interesting.
Because there are things about a holiday that we can compare quite easily.
The price, the flight times, the hotel facilities, the location and what’s included. They’re all important.
But there are other things that aren’t quite so straightforward.
The atmosphere of somewhere… Whether we feel comfortable there… The kind of people we’re likely to meet… Whether we enjoy having plenty going on around us or prefer a bit of peace and quiet…
And how we feel about trying something unfamiliar.
You can’t always understand those things from a star rating or a photograph.
Take two people looking at the same destination;
One might be excited by the thought of arriving somewhere completely different, trying unfamiliar food and learning a little about the local culture. The other might find the same idea rather daunting.
Perhaps they prefer somewhere they’ve visited before, where they know what to expect and can relax from the moment they arrive.
Neither is wrong.
And neither needs convincing that the other person’s idea of a holiday is better.
But what I find interesting is understanding what makes those experiences appealing to each of them.
Because once you know that, you can start looking at holidays in a slightly different way.
🛡 The Voyantra Difference: We specialize in looking beyond the standard review scores to understand what you actually want from being away. A conversation about the type of holiday you enjoy, what matters to you and what you’d prefer to avoid can reveal far more than simply comparing prices and hotels online. For us, that’s part of helping you make a choice you’re entirely comfortable with, rather than trying to make the choice for you.
Do We Sometimes Confuse Familiarity with Preference?
There’s a difference between enjoying somewhere because it’s genuinely what we want, and choosing it simply because it’s comfortable, known, and feels safe.
When a destination becomes a habit, we stop asking ourselves what kind of experience we’re actually craving this time around. We go because we know where the restaurants are, we know what the beaches look like, and we know exactly what we’re going to get.
And for a relaxing trip, that can be a wonderful thing.
But I do wonder whether sometimes we get so used to going somewhere that we stop thinking about why we chose it in the first place.
Perhaps when we first visited, it offered exactly what we were looking for. And perhaps it still does.
But things change, don’t they?
Our interests change, our circumstances change, and sometimes what we want from a holiday changes without us really giving it much thought.
Now, I’m certainly not suggesting that everybody should stop returning to places they love. If you’re happy going back year after year, there’s absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t.
But imagine finding somewhere that offers all the things you already enjoy, along with something else that catches your interest.
It might be another part of a country you’ve visited before, somewhere with a similar atmosphere, or a completely different destination that you hadn’t really considered.
You might look into it and decide it’s not for you.
Fair enough.
But you might also find yourself thinking, “Actually, I quite fancy that.”…And that’s the interesting part for me.
Nothing about what you enjoy has necessarily changed. You’ve simply found another possibility that you didn’t know was there.
I think sometimes we can become so focused on finding the right holiday that we forget how enjoyable the discovery itself can be.
And we don’t have to go somewhere unusual or spend a fortune to experience that. Sometimes it’s just about looking at something from a different angle.
It’s Your Holiday, After All
One of the things I’ve always believed is that understanding what somebody wants is far more useful than simply telling them what’s available.
And that’s something I’ve brought into Voyantra Holidays.
Of course, I want to help people find fantastic holidays. That’s what the business is here for.
But I’m just as interested in understanding why a particular holiday appeals to somebody.
What do they enjoy about it? What would they rather avoid? Is there something they’ve always fancied doing but never really looked into?
Because sometimes a conversation about those things can lead somewhere neither of us was originally expecting.
Perhaps after looking at a few possibilities, the original holiday still turns out to be exactly what they want.
That’s absolutely fine too.
For me, it’s about helping people understand what’s available and giving them the information to make their own choices.
And if there’s something you’d like to explore, whether it’s somewhere familiar or somewhere completely new, you’re always welcome to have a chat with Voyantra Holidays.
You never know what might come out of the conversation.
